TAP-Challenge

In 2022, Roblox, its own mini-metaverse, announced their collaboration with Akili Interactive, the creators of attention deficit disorder treatment EndeavorRx, to create new ways for patients to engage in health through the Roblox platform. The goal is to connect patients’ medical treatments to their favourite virtual worlds. EndeavorRx promotes itself as an FDA-approved treatment for ADHD in children aged 8 to 12. The game, which doctors can prescribe to their patients, rewards them for navigating obstacles and completing tasks in a series of fantasy worlds. Doctors have been able to prescribe it since it was approved for attention deficit hypersensitivity disorder (ADHD) treatment in 2020.

Roblox’s mission is to bring the world together through play. Roblox enables anyone to imagine, create, and have fun with friends as they explore millions of immersive 3D experiences, all built by a global community of developers. For TAP Challenge, we hope to be able to share how we can also create our own mini-metaverse on the Roblox platform. We will leverage on the Roblox platform to create customised content, using this content to engage other users in immersive 3D experiences. Through these games, we aim to encourage “participatory medicine” by allowing patients and their families to gain essential health knowledge to participate in their own selfcare.

“Bridging the caregiver communities by harnessing gaming technologies to empower patients and lay carers.”

TAP Challenge is divided into two parts.

  • Part I: Healthcare professional teams will learn the best practices to conceptualize and design comprehensive storyboards for development of their Patient and Lay Carer Empowerment Games in Roblox.
  • Part II: Tech-savvy student game developer wannabes will learn how to create and develop the Patient and Lay Carer Empowerment Games designed by the healthcare content expert teams in Part I on the Roblox platform itself.

Part I : Healthcare Content Experts

For healthcare professionals participating in Part I, each participating team should constitute between 2 to 5 persons only. By the end of Part 1, each team should be able to:

  • Understand the concepts of serious games.
  • Design a game storyboard with clear concepts, learning objectives and learning outcomes.
  • Develop a serious game storyboard based on best practices and evidence-based frameworks.

Timeline for Storyboard Development:

  1. Storyboarding Training.
  2. Each team will learn how to design and storyboard using concepts, learning objectives and assessment via measurable learning outcomes.
  3. Each team will learn how to formulate serious game outcome, scoring and analytics.
  4. Coaching clinics will be organised for participating teams.
  5. Submission deadline for storyboard.
  6. Top XX storyboards will be selected for Part II.

Part II : Student Game Developers

  2. The organisers will provide the necessary Roblox Game Development Training. The training sessions shall be conducted online via Zoom.
  3. Each team of 2-5 persons will develop their Roblox game
  4. Each team will submit a playable Roblox experience link. Includes a 60-120 second video pitch with:
    • An explanation of your project, including footage or screenshots, and how it connects to the given storyboard.
